Struggling with Freezing Temperatures

With the recent storms plaguing our area, and the outlook for more storms in the near future, people are really struggling with the plummeting temperatures. The Courier Journal reported at least one death attributed to the plunging temps. People are having a hard time paying their heating bills to keep their houses warm enough. I know several electric companies offer programs for you to donate a little extra on your bill to help out those who cannot afford to pay their own bill. These are great programs because you can add a few bucks to your own bill and possibly help keep someone’s heat running.

To find out if your electric company offers these programs, or to see if you qualify for assistance, contact your local electric cooperative.

Here are a few company websites:

Kentucky Utilities: http://www.eon-us.com/ku/default.asp

Warren Rural Electric: http://www.wrecc.com/

American Electric: https://www.kentuckypower.com/Default.aspx

These sites also offer tips for keeping your heating bill reasonable including:

  • Clean or replace furnace filters every 30 days.
  • Clean registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Be sure to move furniture, carpeting or drapes so they are not blocking the registers, heaters or radiators.
  • Insulate your hot water heater to prevent heat loss. You may also want to insulate the hot water pipes in your home.
